Why you cannot export full transcripts out of the Apple Podcasts app
Starting with iOS 17.4, iPadOS 17.4, and macOS Sonoma 14.4, Apple introduced built-in read-along transcripts inside the native Apple Podcasts app. While helpful for glancing at a line while listening, Apple designed the feature as a locked in-app companion rather than a portable document:
- Hard 200-word copy limit — Apple's text selection UI caps every copy action at roughly 200 words and automatically appends a promotional share URL to the clipboard. Copying a single 90-minute interview (~14,000 words) requires more than 70 manual drag-and-copy actions.
- No file export button — There is no way to download a
.txt, .md, .srt, or .vtt file from Apple Podcasts. - No Windows or web transcript reader — Apple Podcasts on the web (
podcasts.apple.com) and on Windows does not expose a full-text transcript export view, leaving non-Apple desktop users with audio only.
Why some episodes on Apple Podcasts have no transcript at all
According to Apple's official podcast creator documentation, even within the native app an episode will be missing its transcript under several common conditions:
- Newly released episodes — Apple's automated indexing queue can take 24 hours or longer after publication before a transcript appears.
- Long-form episodes over 10 hours — Recordings exceeding 10 hours are skipped by Apple's transcript generator.
- Audio crosstalk or background music — Segments with overlapping speakers, music beds, or lower acoustic clarity are frequently omitted or suppressed.
- Unsupported show languages — Shows outside Apple's supported language catalog receive no automated transcript unless the publisher manually uploads a VTT file.
How VideoScript extracts complete Apple Podcasts transcripts
VideoScript bypasses the in-app 200-word selection wall by working directly from the public episode link:
- Episode & feed resolution — When you paste an Apple Podcasts episode URL (including links with
?i= episode IDs), VideoScript resolves the exact episode metadata and publisher feed. - Publisher VTT or high-speed audio transcription — If the podcast publisher has attached an official transcript track (including speaker labels), VideoScript preserves it; otherwise, it streams the public audio recording and transcribes it at roughly 50x real-time speed.
- Complete, timecoded output — Every spoken segment is anchored with an exact
[MM:SS] timestamp and delivered as a single document you can copy in one click or download as a file.
Comparison: Apple Podcasts in-app reader vs. VideoScript
| Capability | Apple Podcasts App | VideoScript |
|---|
| Copy / selection limit | Capped at ~200 words per selection | One-click full episode copy (no word limit) |
| Downloadable files | None (in-app display only) | Markdown (.md), Plain Text (.txt), .srt, .vtt |
| Windows & Linux browser support | No (requires iOS 17.4+ / iPadOS / macOS app) | Works in any desktop or mobile browser |
| Newly published episodes (<24h) | Often delayed 24+ hours | Transcribes immediately (~90s for a 1-hour show) |
When Apple's built-in transcript is the better choice
If you are already listening inside the Apple Podcasts app on an iPhone, iPad, or Mac and only want to check how a guest spelled a book title or copy a single two-sentence quote, Apple's built-in transcript is free and instantaneous. Use VideoScript when you need the entire episode text for research notes, Obsidian/Notion archiving, subtitle editing, or feeding a 2-hour conversation into Claude, ChatGPT, or NotebookLM.
Supported vs. unsupported Apple Podcasts links
- Supported — Any public podcast episode page on
podcasts.apple.com (paste the episode-specific share link containing ?i=..., or paste a show link to transcribe its latest published episode). - Unsupported — Apple Podcasts Subscriptions (paid subscriber-only bonus episodes), DRM-protected streams, and private member feeds. VideoScript only processes publicly accessible audio and never asks for your Apple ID.

Frequently asked questions
- How do I copy an entire transcript from Apple Podcasts without the 200-word limit?

Yes. Because VideoScript runs in any web browser and extracts the episode directly from its public syndication source, you can generate and download full transcripts on Windows, Linux, Chromebook, or Android without an Apple device. - Do I need to sign in with my Apple ID?
Never. VideoScript only requires a VideoScript account (which includes 120 free Credits upon signup) and accesses only public episode links. - How much does it cost after the 120 free minutes?
1 Credit covers 1 minute of audio. You can purchase one-time Credit packs starting at $9.99 (18 hours that never expire) or a 30-Day Pass that never auto-renews. See the pricing page for full details.
